Top tips for single parents

Being a parent as rewarding as it is can be extremely stressful. With all the pressures of social media, over analytical family members and friends and society as a whole, no wonder that single parent oftentimes finds themselves highly wired and stressed surrounded with that added dose of guilt.

Today, I am here to tell you that being a single parent is not easy but there are some ways that can just lift that pressure and the BIG magnifying glass off of your shoulders.





My top tips for coping as a single parent are:


1.Establish a routine

Establishing a routine will ensure that everyone in the house knows what is expected of them. This may include chores, rules around bed time, homework and the like.


2. Seek support

As much as we try to, we simply cannot do everything. It is thus okay to ask for help when you need it. Identify friends, family or support groups in this regard. Seeking therapy is also an option for emotional support and guidance


3. Take it one step at a time

Remember, life happens and thus take the wins as wins and don’t crush yourself for not completing checklists, for having a bad day or for simply not feeling stressed on the day. Take it step by step


4. Celebrate

Find time to celebrate. Being a single parent oftentimes means just focussing on getting tasks done, running from one task to the next , and and and. Thus take time to celebrate, the small as well as the big events in life. Remember: live life while you are still alive.


5. Be kind to yourself

In a world filled with destructive feedback and negativity, you do not need to be your own destroyer. Show praise and gratitude for all your achievements. Focus on your strengths and continuously remind yourself that you are doing a fantastic job.


Remember, you are not alone and many other single parents may be going through the same feelings of hopelessness, guilt, exhaustion and overwhelm.


Smile, place your hand on your heart and say : I am doing an amazing job!
