Depression is a mental illness that negatively affects how we think, feel and behave. Although sadness may be part of the signs of depression, the two are very different.
Below I provide some guidance to help distinguish between feelings of sadness and depression.
Sadness. 😢 😭
Sadness is an emotion.
Reaction to a difficult situation or life event.
Regular reaction to an event.
Gradually goes away.
Sadness differs from person to person.

Depression. 🫥 😞
Depression is a mental illness.
Mood disorder.
Depression can occur with an unapparent reason - not limited to a specific situation.
If left untreated, depression can last for a long time.
Depression is diagnosed.
