Coping with Festive Loneliness: Tips for a Happier Holiday Season

Updated: Nov 1, 2024

Although this may be a time of relaxation and celebration for many, there are people that dread this time of year due to the feeling of loneliness.  Below, I provide a list of 5 tips coping with loneliness over the festive season:

Loneliness during holiday season

1. Make a holiday activity list

Be proactive about what you would like to do during this time. Identify all the sites and places you would like to visit and draw up an itenary. This does not necessary have to be places where you have to spend a lot of money.

2. Ignore advertisements

Many advertisement campaigns depict happy families and gatherings. This is however not the reality because even during this time there is stress and tension.  So don’t create any picture perfect scenarios as this is simply not the case.

3. Surround yourself with people

Connect with a friend that you have been meaning to visit but could never find the right time.  This would be the perfect catch up opportunity. If this is not possible, be around people, either in the mall, or coffee shop.  Being around others, also decreases the feeling of isolation

4.

Volunteer and help others

There is nothing better than feeling that you are making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.  Make time to volunteer at charity organisations, church, old age homes, children homes during this time.  Not only will it help you from feeling isolated but you will also get to meet new people and learn about and from them.  I believe that is a gift in itself

5. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude

Gratitude creates a sense of wellbeing. Keep a gratitude list on a daily basis and look for at least 3 things that you are grateful for. Most importantly, be kind to yourself.

No matter what you decide on doing.  Always remember to be kind and gentle to your self.  Prioritise self care.

Yours in wellness
